Interview with Eliot Cutler, candidate for governor

I sat with Eliot Cutler at his campaign headquarters last week for a 20 minute interview. Cutler is a three-way race for governor, vying with Gov. Paul LePage (R) and Rep. Mike Michaud (D). I was there at the invitation of the Cutler campaign.

There were no restrictions placed on me before the interview, which was to last 20 minutes – unedited. I did not submit my questions to Cutler beforehand.

I asked Cutler about the perception that he will play the spoiler in this year’s race; about where he would place himself on the political spectrum; how he would work with legislative leaders of both major parties should he win election; how his experience in the business world would serve Maine; how he would work to rebuild the manufacturing base; increasing the minimum wage; attracting younger workers to the state; and increasing Maine’s role in international shipping.

  1. I mention Angus not as a non-seq but as a comment on DB’s past enthusiasms for “Independents.”

  2. I love to see that stock picture of Senator Angus King in the BDN. He is trying to project judiciousness, wisdom, statesmanship, and bipartisanship, but it always just looks like he’s pointing to the exact spot on his forehead where the migraine is just killing him.

And I read recently that he threatens to caucus with Republicans–Mitch, Rand, Mike, Lyndsey, Ted, Marco, Thad–if they retake the Senate.

I’m not much of a fan of the rather gray Mike Michaud, but another four years of a businessman in the Blaine House–either one–is a galling prospect. I understand that all politicians are megalomaniacs, but for the sake of enhancing his already bloated amour-propre, EC seems perfectly willing to trash the state he claims to want to serve by giving us another go-round with PLP.

  3. Cutler also sat with Steve Robinson of the MaineWire, the propaganda sheet of the right wing advocacy group Maine Heritage Policy Center (MHPC). Watch it here:
