Although I realize this is a Far Left and Liberal website, IMO, our government should not try to become a health insurance and health care provider for this country. While this is obviously a very large and important issue for America, I believe we must take an honest look at the facts.
As one recent example, which was illustrated in Fraiday's WSJ article called "No Maine Miracle Cure - Another state 'public option' that failed" (posted at http://online.wsj.com/article/... the Dirigo Plan is a flaming failure and has wasted millions of Maine tax dollars. Why can't these failed state projects serve as an example for what not to do?
Here is one detailed example (IMO) of this bad government decision/action by the Baldacci Administration:
In Maine's government-run Dirigo program, the per person staff compensation has increased a whopping $35,734 since 2006 while massive amounts of work/services have also been contracted out through various contracts with the private sector.
STAFF COMPENSATION:
Dirigo Health - 2008
10 staff people with total compensation of $1,026,238
Average Compensation = $ 102,623.00 per person in 2008
NOTE: This is a $35,734 per person increase since 2006.
When Maine's average household income was what?
Dirigo Health - 2007
14 staff people with total compensation of $988,036
Average Compensation = $ 70,574.00 per person in 2007
Dirigo Health - 2006
17 staff people with total compensation of $1,137,114
Average Compensation = $ 66,889.00 per person in 2006

thanks to the good work of MHPC.
