They get to vote

by: Marc Malon

Tue Jun 08, 2010 at 08:48:24 AM EDT

One of my favorite scenes in The West Wing takes place just before the polls open in a fictionalized version of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire (the first place to vote in the New Hampshire primary). It shows a frantic White House staffer trying to convince this couple of why they need to vote for the President, and the conversation isn't going well. Finally, after going around and around, another staffer takes the phone from her and says, "they get to vote now."

You get to vote now.

After all that us campaign staffers have tried to do to persuade you, all the speeches and the ads, it is in your hands now.

I believe in Libby Mitchell. She had my vote long before I joined her campaign. I believe that she can get things done; and that's the most important quality one can have in this environment.

But more than that, I believe in Maine Democratic voters. I know you will have thought through your decision carefully, and will choose the person you think is best to lead our party and our state.

A special thanks is owed to Gerald for providing this forum for all of the campaigns and for being a fair moderator. This was a great service for Democrats and progressives in this state.

I'll see you after the polls close.

Onward!

MITCHELL HIGHLIGHTS HEALTH CARE REFORM'S BENEFITS FOR MAINE

Senator Mitchell lauds President Obama for his leadership on the eve of his visit to Maine

AUGUSTA - Senate President and Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Libby Mitchell (D-Kennebec) highlighted health care reform's benefits for Maine and praised President Barack Obama's leadership on the issue, on the eve of the President's April 1st visit to Maine.

"I applaud President Obama for his leadership in passing this historic health care reform law," said Mitchell. "The law expands many of the protections Maine has led the way on to the entire country."

Senator Mitchell has led the way on health care reforms in Maine that are similar to the provisions in the Federal law. For example:

-    In Maine, insurance companies are not allowed to deny consumers coverage due to pre-existing conditions. The national reforms extend these protections.
-    Since 2007, Maine has allowed young adults to remain on dependent health care plans up to the age of 25. The national reforms extend the maximum age to 26.
-    The Maine Legislature just passed a bill to prevent insurers from imposing annual and lifetime caps on benefits. The national reforms prohibit lifetime caps.

Senator Mitchell continued, "The reforms Congress passed will strengthen the reform work Maine has been a national leader on. I am proud to stand with President Obama in support of these reforms, and as Governor I will work with leaders across the state and the nation to make sure they are implemented as effectively and as efficiently as possible."

The national reforms will also reduce Maine's family health insurance premiums by $1,730-$2,474 according to data from DHHS.

Senator Mitchell is the only woman in the country to have served both as President of the Senate and Speaker of the House. Former President Bill Clinton recently endorsed her candidacy, citing her record of accomplishments.  She will be attending President Obama's event in Maine on Thursday afternoon.

Send Some Soap!

by: Marc Malon

Fri Jan 22, 2010 at 17:38:27 PM EST

(I've promised all the gubernatorial candidates that I would try to remain above the fray of the campaign, and so want to say that I promote this because it is a great idea, no matter who brings it to our attention. Not sure why no one thought that Susan Collins couldn't use some soap too, but - promoted by Gerald Weinand)

Libby Mitchell mentioned this in the comments section of Gerald's post on the Supreme Court decision, but I thought it warranted a front page view. [Full disclosure - I am Senator Mitchell's Campaign Manager]

Senator Mitchell believes that the Court decision makes Clean Elections even more important than ever, and urges Congress (including our Senators) to support the Fair Elections Now Act that Reps Pingree & Michaud have co-sponsored.

A great website to visit is Send Some Soap. If you fill in the contact form, the site will pass along an e-mail from you to Senator Snowe urging her to support the bill.

I filled it out earlier today, and I encourage you to do the same. Every additional voice helps.
