Dem to introduce "Stupak-like" amendement to Senate health insurance reform bill

by: Gerald Weinand

Wed Dec 02, 2009 at 14:33:16 PM EST

The Hill reports that Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NB) will introduce an amendment to the Senate's health insurance reform bill that will be "as identical to Stupak as it can be:"

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) will attempt to strengthen language in the healthcare reform bill prohibiting federal funding of abortion, he said.

Nelson, a key swing vote on the overall bill and an opponent of abortion rights, specifically said he would base his amendment on language authored by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) that passed in the House's healthcare bill - and ignited a firestorm among Democrats and supporters of abortion rights that quickly spread to the Senate debate.

Nelson said he and other senators, "perhaps" including Democrats, plan to introduce an amendment "something like Stupak" on the Senate floor. The prospects of such an amendment passing, however, are slim. Republican abortion-rights opponents include Nelson's home-state colleague, Sen. Mike Johanns, have conceded they cannot muster the 60 votes they would need to attach the Stupak language to the Senate bill.

Both of Maine's senators are strong supporters of a woman's right to choose, but they might need to be reminded of that. You can call them:

Sen. Olympia Snowe: 202.224.5344

Sen. Susan Collins: 202.224.2523

Collins and Abortion (0.00 / 0)
Sen. Collins is nominally a supporter of a woman's right to choose. But I'm not sure I would call her a strong supporter.

She voted to confirm Alito (0.00 / 0)
That destroyed any "pro-choice" cred with me.  I'd be very dubious if either of them voted against this amendment.  I think Snowe voted for it in committee, iirc.

Ben Nelson needs a dope slap from Harry Reid. We don't need this stuff emanating from the Democratic party. But that will never happen.

Snowe voted against Hatch in Committee (0.00 / 0)
Senator Snowe voted against the "Hatch" amendment, which is exactly like the Stupak Ban, in the Senate Finance committee.  Both Senator Snowe and Senator Collins feel the Stupak ban goes to far and will not be supporting the Hatch/Nelson amendment on the floor.

Thanks, Chris (4.00 / 1)
I'm very happy to hear that.  I've contacted both of them but haven't heard back yet. I'll definitely send them my thanks when they vote against this.
Also thanks for the correction.  Perhaps I was thinking about the abstinence-only funding in the bill? Didn't Snowe vote for that amendment?
Thanks for all the work your organization is doing on HCR.

Tax dollars for abortions? (0.00 / 0)
Why do you seem to believe our tax dollars should be used to fund abortions?  IMO, if a woman wants to have an abortion let her pay for it and leave the taxpayers out of the equation... especially since you're also talking about a major sin.

Why would women think that (4.00 / 1)
tax dollars could be used for a legal medical procedure? Gee, I don't know.

Perhaps the health insurance reform bill should ban funding for Viagra and hair loss treatments.

I Agree with antiEFCA and Gerald (0.00 / 0)
No Viagra, hair loss treatments, abortions, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, vaginal rejuvenation, hip replacements, sexual reassignment, dental care, etc.

Only life saving, catastrophic health care.  That eliminates the controversy

[ Parent ]
You call it a major sin... (4.00 / 1)
...however the majority of Mainers, and Americans, call it a legal medical procedure.  Whether you like it or not, it is legal.  Name one other legal medical procedure that is treated this way in the insurance market?

[ Parent ]
A major sin (0.00 / 0)
is a man having unprotected sex and causing an unwanted pregnancy, in my book.
