Joe Lieberman

by: Gerald Weinand

Mon Nov 09, 2009 at 17:46:39 PM EST

We were told that Joe Lieberman was an important element of the Democratic control of the Senate. Most wonks understood that Joe Lieberman was - and is - the most important element to Joe Lieberman.

In calling for an investigation into last week's shootings at Ft. Hood, Lieberman said:

Therefore, if that is true, the murder of these 13 people was a terrorist act and, in fact, it was the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11.

I will remind the senator from Connecticut of the Beltway Snipers, which didn't match the death toll of Maj. Nidal M. Hasan's attack, but lasted instead for three full weeks, plunging the area around our nation's capitol into terror, with tarps hanging at gas stations and people too frightened to mow their own lawns.

But don't let that get in the way, Joe. The cameras will surely follow you on this one, and no doubt some of your close colleagues.

Not sure I get your point (0.00 / 0)
Politicians use tragedy for their advantage all the time.  Bill Clinton used the shooting at Columbine to build one of his political comebacks.  Chellie Pingree used her brother's death to shill for votes in a TV ad.

cheap shot, Dan. (0.00 / 0)
Losing a family member to cancer is not a public tragedy. And talking honestly about how that influenced one to work for healthcare reform is not "shilling."

Ah, Dan Billings.  Man Of Principle.  Objective Observer.  No-Spin Dan.  "I report, you decide."

Clinton + Columbine = political opportunism.

Pingree + uninsured dead brother + vote for health care for uninsured Americans = political cynicism.

Bush + 9/11 =  What?  Nothing, Dan?

Bush + Katrina + Brownie = Uh, I guess, nuttin', for Dan at least.

Uh, not sure I get your point, Dan.  Oh wait, I DO!  It's the Limbaugh/Hannity/Beck/Malkin/Coulter, etc. Party Line!

At least on health care, Lieberman is standing tall for one of his state's major industries:  Insurance Companies.  Of course, if he voted to just hand Big Insurance (as if there's any other kind) a few million bucks that might be seen as pork.  But making sure they don't lost a cent of their "Medicare Advantage" tax dollars, or have to honestly compete with someone who is Not One Of Us, is just plain "voting his conscience."

Nothin' wrong with that, right Dan?  Just so long as he isn't kowtowing to those librul "Special Interests."

Also, while we're on the subject of overlooked domestic terrorism, be sure to keep in mind that the anthrax attacks never happened; they didn't scare the crap out of millions of Americans (among them, maybe even Lieberman staffers?) for weeks and weeks. And certainly, no one died because of them.

Glad to have cleared that up.

I wasn't aware of this until just now, but (0.00 / 0)

No one could've predicted this: (0.00 / 0)
MPBN reports that Sen. Susan Collins announces hearing on Fort Hood slayings:

It is important for our nation to understand what precipitated this horrific attack so that we may work to prevent future incidents. The investigation is about understanding the factors that led Major Hasan, a senior Army officer and a psychiatrist trained to ease human suffering, to kill and injure so many of his fellow soldiers," Collins says in a statement released in conjunction with committee chair Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut Independent. "Our military must be prepared to detect the warning signs for potential violence and to intervene and prevent similar attacks in the future.
