I can understand the frustration that a candidate must feel when rumors and stories circulate about him, especially if such stories have little or no basis in fact.
I don't know what GOP hopeful Paul LePage heard, nor the veracity of them, but one thing is for sure (h/t louis wilson):
His campaign should never have left him leave this message on the the answering machine of someone that supports another candidate:
When I first heard it I thought to myself, "Nah, this can't be true. With technology what it is today, no one is this stupid to leave such a message."
But I called the number left, and after about ten rings, Paul LePage himself picked up. I explained to him that I had seen a post at As Maine Goes which included the message above, and wanted to know if he had in fact left it.
LePage said to me that he had, that he just wanted to talk to the woman about an email she had sent out, and he asked me if there was a name given at the post. It seems that it was put up by a man, Louis Wilson, although the audio file was created by Emily Farber.
I have no idea when LePage left the message, but there is little doubt that the timing of the release will have some impact on his chances tomorrow.
But what is most important is what it portends about a Governor LePage: does he possess the self-restraint necessary to be the chief executive of Maine?
