GOP Goes Negative on Angus King

Today the National Republican Senatorial Committee decided to unload on Angus King implying that he has made a back room deal.

Do note however that this is just a cheap web video and it remains to be seen if after sifting through the pailful of poor Republican candidates now racing around for signatures if the national GOP will put any real money into the Maine Senate race to rip down Independent King or the eventual Democratic nominee.

The GOP did make sure they were the first to lower the bar.

  1. First they took out Olympia Snowe, now they’re coming for Angus King.

  2. Since everyone assumes King will dilute the Democrat votet, and we have some recent history in what the result is when that happens, I would think the Democrats would want to hold on to the almost sure thing of Chellie holding her seat in the House. She runs for Senate even without a King out there mucking up the sacred two party system, and she will have problems , especially up country.

It’s obvious a split vote will once again favor the Republicans. The State Democrats need to really consider their options and decide what they want to do. Make a statement, or at least have an independent in the Senate who by all appearances seems to lean in their direction.

Do they realize that King will probably win and they are just pushing him further away from possibly caucusing with the Republicans?

    Are they really that dumb?

  5. First result of inept GOP attack? King says President Obama deserves second term.

  6. It seems no one remembers that Governor King left incoming Governor Baldacci at $1.2 BILLION DOLLAR shortfall – You need to take a deep breath and meditate if you think Governor King was great for the State of Maine.

    • And I think Governor Baldacci deserves recognition for dealing with it the way he did at the time. However this match up is being framed around form not function in a different time.

Governor King is getting a pass as the anti-incumbent government former incumbent governor. He left office on a high and our short fiscal memories; John Baldacci left on a low note in recent fiscal memory.

  8. One has to assume that if this ad goes a bit viral that it will impact signature gathering efforts of would-be Republican candidates. There is a big push this weekend to collect signatures.

    • I clicked on that link without checking the URL, and made my first visit to As Maine Goes! The first post is telling:

“With King and Baldacci splitting the liberal vote, we could capture the Senate seat in a similar fashion as LePage did the Blaine House”

That’s exactly what I’m afraid of. wWish our 2 former govs had checked their egos at the door and got out of Chellie’s way.

      • I could be wrong but I bet John Baldacci will not run.

      • I actually like John Baldacci, Marisol — he did a good job with the bad hand he was dealt — but I don’t see him surviving a Democratic primary, let alone having some kind of significant effect on the general. If he did survive the primary he’d probably leave more Dems flocking to King than not. Dunlap, Dill, or Hinck would probably hold more of them than Baldacci would.

        • I don’t think that Baldacci did a bad job, either, Ed, but the way he did it seemed to alienate even lots of Democrats. I think he should be pleased that he got out of office with his dignity intact & a nice federal job to boot. It appears to me his ego is more at play in his becoming a candidate than any realistic shot of winning.

  9. “The GOP did make sure they were the first to lower the bar.”

I would expect no less from the current leadership of the Right.

    • One might think that peeling possible moderate Republican voters who like King away from him by emphasizing a bigger GOP tent would be smarter than unloading on Angus at this point. Oh wait, sorry, I did mention “smarter.”
