Roll Call reports that a new poll shows US Rep. Mike Michaud has a commanding lead over his main challenger, Maine Sen. Kevin Raye:
Michaud led state Senate President Kevin Raye (R) 55 percent to 32 percent in the poll conducted by Democratic polling firm Normington Petts. The survey also showed Michaud with a favorable/unfavorable rating of 51 percent/19 percent and with 88 percent name identification in the redrawn district.
Buzz has been growing about Raye’s candidacy since his Jan. 5 announcement. Republicans dismissed the survey.
“These numbers aren’t surprising considering the poll was conducted by a Democrat pollster, but there’s a clear Republican path to victory,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Nat Sillin told Roll Call.
The race will be a rematch of their 2002 contest for the open seat left by John Baldacci, who successfully ran to be Maine’s governor. Michaud defeated Raye by about 8,000 votes.
